Why Does My Neck and Shoulder Hurt After Working at a Computer?
Your neck may feel perfectly normal when you begin work in the morning.
Then noon arrives.
The muscles across your shoulders start feeling heavy. By 4 p.m., turning your head feels stiff, and you find yourself rubbing the area where your neck meets your shoulder.
If this sounds familiar, the answer may involve more than simply having “bad posture.”
At Northeast Chiropractic Center in Alpharetta, Dr. Linsey Grant sees patients whose symptoms become noticeable after prolonged computer work, commuting and other activities requiring sustained positions.
The Problem Isn’t Necessarily One “Wrong” Posture
People are often shown diagrams depicting one perfect sitting posture and another supposedly dangerous one.
Human bodies aren’t quite that simple.
You can sit in an excellent ergonomic position and still become uncomfortable if you barely move for hours.
For many desk workers, duration and lack of movement can be just as relevant as the precise angle of the chair.
That changes the goal.
Instead of attempting to freeze yourself in a perfect posture all day, create a workstation that allows comfortable movement and position changes.
Why Do the Shoulders Become Tight Too?
Your neck, upper back and shoulder girdle work together.
Computer work can involve prolonged low-level muscle activity, especially when you’re reaching for a mouse, elevating the shoulders or leaning toward a monitor.
The result can be discomfort across more than one area.
That’s also why treating only the exact spot where you feel soreness may not tell the whole story.
Dr. Grant can evaluate cervical motion along with relevant shoulder, upper-back and neurological findings when indicated.
Check Your Monitor Before Blaming Your Neck
Look directly ahead from your normal working position.
Are you constantly looking down?
Is the screen positioned off to one side?
Do you lean forward because the text is difficult to see?
Simple workstation changes can sometimes make computer work more comfortable.
If you use two monitors but spend most of your time looking at one, consider placing the primary monitor more directly in front of you rather than repeatedly rotating your neck for hours.
Don’t Forget the Mouse
People frequently adjust their chair and monitor but leave the mouse far away.
Repeatedly reaching forward or sideways can change the position of your shoulder and upper body.
Keep frequently used equipment comfortably accessible.
Again, there is no single perfect measurement that fits everyone. Your body proportions, desk, chair and job are different from someone else’s.
Your Commute May Be Part of the Pattern
Many NECC patients travel between Alpharetta, Roswell and surrounding North Fulton communities.
After a full day at a computer, another extended period sitting in traffic on Holcomb Bridge Road or GA-400 may mean even more time in a relatively static position.
Notice when your symptoms occur.
If you’re comfortable on weekends but consistently hurting after several hours of weekday computer work and commuting, that pattern is useful information for your examination.
What If Pain Travels Into My Arm?
Neck pain accompanied by symptoms extending into the shoulder, arm or hand deserves closer attention.
Tell Dr. Grant about:
- Numbness or tingling
- Burning or electric-like discomfort
- Hand or arm weakness
- Changes in grip
- Symptoms extending into specific fingers
- Pain increased by certain neck movements
These symptoms don’t automatically mean you have a pinched nerve or herniated disc, but they can influence the examination and treatment recommendations.
Do You Need an X-Ray?
Not every patient with neck pain needs imaging.
Imaging decisions should be based on the history, examination and clinical findings rather than performed routinely simply because someone has neck discomfort.
When imaging is clinically appropriate, Northeast Chiropractic Center has digital X-ray capability as part of its current new-patient examination offering. Northeast Chiropractic Center
What Can You Do During the Workday?
Try thinking in terms of movement opportunities, rather than searching for a magical posture.
Move your neck gently through comfortable ranges periodically. Stand and walk when your schedule permits. Alternate tasks when possible. Reposition your chair during the day. Keep your primary monitor and keyboard comfortably accessible.
Small changes performed consistently can be more practical than an elaborate ergonomic setup you don’t actually use.
When Should Neck Pain Be Evaluated?
Consider an evaluation when symptoms persist, repeatedly return, interfere with sleep or work, or begin limiting normal movement.
Seek more urgent medical attention for significant trauma, progressive weakness, major coordination problems or other severe or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms.
Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain in Alpharetta
When examination findings indicate conservative care is appropriate, recommendations may include chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic exercise, rehabilitation and other measures selected for the individual.
The purpose isn’t to promise that an adjustment fixes every case of desk-related neck pain.
It is to identify relevant musculoskeletal findings, determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate and build a plan around the patient’s presentation and goals.
